QT Hotel Melbourne

First and foremost let me wish you all a very healthy and happy 2017. 

It all started very well for me and my family with some holidays off the slopes in Val d’Isère ( previous post ) followed by a business trip to visit my company’s headquarters in dream city Melbourne

I love that city. Its people. Its passion for nature, sport, food and coffee. Never been there ? Pin it for one of your next trip then as it is a must !

I have been lucky enough to stay at the QT Hotel. It recently opened and is all I like. Small. Excellent service and friendly staff from all over the world. Free internet. Great rooftop terrace. Competitive pricing at around 250 AUD including breakfast. And last but not least an exceptionally good restaurant and room service at excellent value for money ratio.

Petersham Nurseries

Since we relocated to Richmond surrey early 2015, this restaurant kept surprising us. The location by the River Thames is mind blowing. The staff extremmely friendly but professional and efficient. And the food is simply succulent led by recently hired head chef Damian Clisby, an ex HIX Soho resident.

The Boglione family owns the place which is composed of a wonderful plants and tree nursery, a café, a shop selling antiques and the restaurant.

With their Italian roots, no surprise this is a constant in the cuisine they serve and ingredients they use. All at the summit of freshness.

This is a true bowl of fresh air away from the city close by the richmond royal park.

ZOILO ,London , certainly the best Argentinian option in town

I will write this post in Spanish for a couple of reasons. Number one is for all my beloved Argentinian and Spanish speaking followers. Second as  a way to celebrate change. This blog is dedicated to art de vivre and it has never been intended to discuss politics. But I am so proud and happy that the people from Argentina decided last week end to say “Basta!”to Peronism and populism which brought this wonderful country at the very edge of collapse. There is hope again and I sincerely hope the new president will be called Mr Mauricio Macri. VAMOS ARGENTINA. VAMOS “CAMBIEMOS!”  

Ahora hablamos de comida. De comida argentina espectacular en Londres. El lugar  se llama “ZOILO” y se encuentra al lado de Selfridges en el número 9 de duke street. 

Nos gustó mucho el diseño tipo bistro parisino. La gente. 

El concepto son tapas para compartir. Cada tapa tiene precio entre 3.50 GBP ( por una empanada ) y 10 GBP ( por los platos caliente como el burger ). 

Creo que nunca comimos tan rico en un restaurant argentino. La provoleta sin duda la mejor que nunca tuvimos. Y probamos muchas estos últimos Díez años. 

  
La empanada súper casera con una masa muy liviana. Un tiradito de sea bass como en los mejores peruanos. 

Como plato caliento mi mujer pidió un asado. Ni les cuento la calidad de la carne. Cocción perfecta. 

Yo tuve el burger. Igual. Un éxito total !

Por el vino, elegimos 2 bodegas que siempre nos gustó. La linda 2011 y trumpeter 2013. 6 GBP la copa. Imbatible en Londres. 
Terminamos con peras cocinadas en vino tinto, servidas frías con un sorbete de ricota. Acompañado por una copa de vino dulce tinto. Un malbec obvio. 

Comimos con 7 tapas y 6 copas de vino. Por menos de 100 GBP. 

Les digo. Este lugar les vas a encantar ! Hace falta reservar con anticipación.

Garance – Boutique restaurant in Saint Germain des Près

First I apologise to my dear followers I have not taken the time to share some good food tips for too long. The tremendous pace of life has taken over ! But I am absolutely committed to fight back ! So here is one to share a dinner with your lover ! Indeed I went there in April to share lunch with one of my best friend. Located in Saint Germain des près, Paris, GARANCE was opened quite recently by a couple of young fresh chef and sommelier both trained by Alain passard. The design of the place itself is a mix of warmth and minimalism ! Just enough of both so you feel welcome and relaxed. A bit like a well balanced cosmopolitan cocktail !

From the moment you pass the door, you know you will have a special moment. Apart from the great company, I had two amazing dishes. Simple, fresh, authentic !

The first one was “bonite” in carpaccio. Which is small tuna. The main was “pavé de lieu”, another delicious fish.

Both served with a perfectly balanced white inexpensive wine. The owner being a wine fanatic always in the search of new flavours and unknown domain or regions.

At Garance, you really can only get it right ! Unless you have the wrong company ! ;-)

I had to go to uruguay to enjoy a great Caprese !

Those days ( I should say indeed years )  you will admit it became a real challenge to enjoy a good Caprese salad. Even in Italy, in most cases the tomatoes have no taste and the mozarella is not fresh and served in little balls….I had to go to uruguay to finally experience the simpliest dish on earth. Local tomatoes from mercado Belcampo ( previous post ) and fresh moza from a closeby farmer. But I’ll stop here as words are pointless sometimes. Enjoy the pic !

Mercado BELCAMPO – José Ignacio

This is a new comer in the Village, recently opened in December 2011. Mercado BELCAMPO is producing organic fruits and vegetables in their Estancia located 30mn in land, which they are selling and serving at their restaurant situated at the very entrance of José Ignacio. They also organize upon request traditional uruguayan “Asados” at the Estancia. Understand the best BBQ you’ll ever experience. Asking the restaurant, you can also be offered to visit the farm.

We have been cooking the past 2 days using their production. Tomatoes, beetroots, carrots, eggplant, eggs, herbs, onions, basilico, lettuces…. What can I say ? You immediately feel this is being done with passion and deep knowledge. So a first set of congratulations to the team behind this organic and sustainable initiative.

Tired of cooking, we decided yesterday to have our lunch at their place. Possibly one of the best simple food we’ve had for a long period of time. My wife had  “Empanadas de Carne y cebolla ” as a starter followed by “Ensalada de remolachas asadas, huevos duro y ricotta” being the main course. I respectively had “bruschetta de tomates secos, mozarella y albahaca” followed by “Sandwich de carne, pepinos y cebolla”. As you read, this is no sophisticated food at all and something we can all do at home. All this was simply wonderful. We should have stopped there…but kept being tempted by the desserts. And ended up ordering “una tarta de chocolate con dulce de leche” and “Panqueque con dulce de leche y azucar”.

We want to say a big thank you to the staff for this authentic moment and encourage them to keep simplicity and freshness at the center of their approach for the years to come. Do not leave your values aside with success !
